Philippine Colonial Churches and the Issues of Restoration
As President of the Heritage Conservation Society, Ms. Bambi L Harper has been involved in the process of inspecting and documenting colonial churches around the Philippines for the restoration project of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts.
Twenty churches were identified for possible restoration. The list of 20 was drawn up from nominations by parish priests, area residents and interested parties. According to Ms. Harper, the criteria used in the selection were: (a) uniqueness; (b) integrity of the existing complex --the convent, church and plaza still exist or changes made are reversible; (c) the church is not on the Unesco World Heritage List; (d) only one church per province or region will get help.
MVP was fortunate to have Ms. Harper
share her insights and photographs of her trips around the
archipelago. Some of the places visited include Betis in Pampanga, Masinloc
in Zambales, Majayjay in Laguna, Maragondon in Cavite, Tanay in Rizal, Guian
in Samar, Boljoon in Cebu, Bacong in Dumaguete, Lazi
in Siquijor, Jimenez in Dapitan, and
Jasaan in Cagayan de Oro.
